The essence of Montessori education is that every child is treated with respect, given freedom within the limits of a carefully structured environment and allowed to develop naturally at his or her own pace.

    Primary Movement and Primary Reflexes

I am delighted to offer children The Primary Movement Exercise Programme. This unique movement programme has been researched and devised by Dr. Martin McPhillips, School of Psychology Queens University, Belfast. “A Second Chance” was the title of a BBC documentary about the benefits of Primary Movement. The programme replicates the primary reflexes in calm gentle movement.

    What are Primary Reflexes?

Primary Reflexes are the essential survival reflexes of the foetus and the newborn, but they should be inhibited or switched off as development proceeds. Children who have retained these reflexes may not always achieve their full potential and may present with difficulty in reading, writing, comprehension and co-ordination.

    What are Primary Movement

The Primary Movement programme works to inhibit or switch off the primary reflexes, through calm gentle movements, replicating the reflexes themselves. This will also improve balance and co-ordination and thus improving self-esteem. .
